Description

It has a red belly and a white moustache. They have adapted morphologically to living and feeding in the highest parts of trees, at over 10 metres’ high. They have an opposable thumb, nails in their fingers and a long tail that helps them move agilely and find food. They live in groups of up to 15 individuals and even relate with other species of tamarin.

Ethology
They are diurnal animals and form familial social groups that travel together in search of food. The group is led    by a dominant female, who is the breeder, and a breeder male. They are very territorial and they eliminate competition by sending non-breeder males and females  to the other group. They mark their territory by means of glandular secretions that leave a characteristic smell. They are monogamous. The gestation period lasts for 140-150 days, and they can give birth to twins.

Interesting Facts
They are hunted by numerous birds of prey, such as owls or eagles, which is why when going to sleep they look for forks in the branches and rest their heads on their chest to hide the white marks making them harder to spot.
