Description
This mammal is characterised by having a robust body and legs, abundant, long wool, an elongated snout, and a short tail. Males usually have large, curved horns, while when females have horns they are small and straight.There are numerous breeds, and so they may vary greatly in size and colour.
Ethology
They are diurnal and gregarious animals, all members of a flock reacting in the same way and being easily guided. Males, called rams, usually fight to mate with the females. They have a gestation period of approximately 5 months, after which they birth one or two lambs. Sheep may live for up to 20 years.
Interesting facts
Sheep are originally from south-west Asia. Their domestication dates back to 9,000 to 12,000 BCE. From sheep we obtain wool, meat and milk. Their skin is also used to manufacture various leather products.
