Ankole cattle
Bos taurus

Description
It is a large bovine. They generally has a dark red colour, although their coat may also be brown or black. Both males and females have the largest horns of any species of cattle – they can reach almost 2 metres! These horns are hollow, which helps them to disperse excess body heat, as the blood circulating through the horn cools and then returns to the body. This helps them to withstand temperatures which exceed 45ºC.
Ethology
They live in large herds. Due to predation, these herds have very strong protection instincts and when sleeping, adults surround the calves, keeping them safe at the centre. They have a gestation of just over nine months and can live for over 20 years.
Interesting facts
It is considered a domestic breed in Africa, from which meat and milk are obtained. Some tribes take fresh blood straight from the jugular vein and consume it. In Rwanda, Ankole-Watusis cannot be sacrificed or milked, as they are considered sacred, with only their dung being used as fuel.
