Description

With black or dark gray fur, featuring yellowish tones on the back and chest and a reddish-brown tail, it stands out for its long, curved white whiskers. These are not only distinctive but may also serve for social identification and hierarchical organization within the group. Its long tail, although not prehensile, is key for maintaining balance while moving among the branches.

Behaviour

It is a social animal that lives in small family groups of up to 15 individuals. Only one female, usually the highest-ranking, reproduces and often has twins after a gestation period of approximately 140 days. Raising the young is cooperative: males and other group members care for and carry the infants, while the mother primarily handles nursing.

Interesting Facts

Although it is still relatively widespread in its distribution area, some populations are affected by deforestation and forest fragmentation. It is omnivorous: feeding on fruits, insects, nectar, flowers, and small vertebrates, which helps seed dispersal and the balance of the tropical forest.
