Description

A striking bird with mostly black plumage, with a white throat contrasting with its dark wings and back. It stands out for its large beak, mainly black with blue and yellow tones at the base. The breast features a yellow-orange patch and a red lower band, while the tail is black with reddish edges. The eyes are surrounded by bare blue skin, giving the bird a very colorful and distinctive appearance.

Behaviour

They emit high-pitched, croaking calls, and during courtship they preen each other and toss fruit to one another. They are monogamous and nest in tree cavities, where both parents participate in rearing the young. The female lays two to four white eggs, which are incubated for 15 to 16 days. The chicks hatch helpless, are fed by regurgitation, and remain in the nest for about six weeks.

Interesting Facts

Their main threat is deforestation in the Amazon, caused by the expansion of cattle ranching and soybean cultivation. Ecologically, they play a key role in controlling pests by feeding on insects and in aiding seed dispersal, thereby contributing to forest regeneration and ecological balance.
