Northern talapoin monkey

Description

It is a small primate. Its fur is olive green on the back and white on the underside. Its face and ears are also a light colour. Females and young males are generally paler than adult males. The head is round with large, prominent ears and a short, hairless snout.

Ethology

They are diurnal and arboreal, living near rivers and swamps. If attacked by a predator, they jump into the water and swim. They live in groups of 20 to 100 members, divided into subgroups, slightly hierarchical family units. After 5-6 months of gestation, a well-developed young is born.

Interesting facts

Despite being a species with a good conservation status, some populations are threatened by habitat destruction and by illegal hunting for sale as pets. It is the smallest species of Old World monkeys.
