Description

They are robust animals, dark brown in colour with patches of white on the head and stomach. The tail is almost black and they have black streaks on their faces that go from their enormous ears to the nose. Both males and females have large antlers.

Ethology

They are more or less sedentary depending on food availability. They are sociable and live in groups formed by a single breeding male and the females. The males are very territorial and will patrol their territories marking them with urine and secretions from the glands under their eyes. They use their horns to defend themselves in combat.

Interesting facts

This species is seriously threatened in the wild due to overhunting for use as food and habitat degradation. Zoos are currently working on captivity breeding programs to reintroduce them into new protected areas.
