Burmese python

Description

One of the largest snakes in the world. The females are larger than the males and have a smaller head compared with their body. The main colour of the body is light yellow with a series of elongated rectangular brown markings with black edges. They are constrictors.

Ethology

They are solitary, and can live for around 30 years. They reproduce at the start of spring, and can lay up to 100 eggs which will be incubated by the female until they hatch. They do not feed during this period, which can last two months or more. Once the hatchlings are born, they must fend for themselves.

Interesting facts

It is catalogued as vulnerable by the IUCN. Their populations are declining at an alarming rate due to being captured for their skin, traditional medicine and the pet trade, as well as due to habitat degradation.
