Description
It belongs to the family of camels on the American Continent. It has a long and thin neck and a thick coat that varies from dark beige to white, although more commonly, it has a reddish brown coat with white or yellow patches. The head is narrow with round ears and the upper lip is cleft. The two lower incisors protrude from its mouth. Its feet have 2 toes with thick pads on the sole.

Ethology
They are diurnal and tend to congregate in groups. They form herds normally consisting of a dominant male and numerous females accompanied by their crias. The dominant male can be aggressive with other males to defend its territory. If they feel threatened, they will spit, kick or bite the intruder. Gestation lasts for approximately 11 months and results in one cria. 

Interesting facts
It is the domestic form of the guanaco and was possibly the first animal to be bred by the Andean People about 8,000 years ago. Wool, leather, meat are obtained from the animal. It was very important as a means of transport for the Andean culture, as it can carry loads of up to 75 kg.
