Description
Is a large rodent with a robust body and large head. It has long, yellowish brown fur. It has whitish areas on the sides of the face, the nose, the lips and the chin. Its feet have a dark brown to black colour and its flattened tail varies in colour from black to dark brown.

Ethology
They are solitary animals which are more active in the morning and the evening. After a 31-32 day gestation, litters are born in a den within an extensive system of burrows that they dig. Each year there is a litter of 2 to 6 pups.

Interesting Facts
They have excellent vision and are able to climb trees to escape enemies. When frightened, groundhogs give a loud whistle. During the summer the groundhog gains weight to prepare for hibernation. With the arrival of winter the groundhog rolls into a ball in the burrow and enters a deep sleep where its respiration rate and heartbeat lower considerably.
