Pony

Equus ferus caballus

Food :

Description

Ponies are similar to horses but smaller. They have a much thicker coat, especially on the mane and tail. Their legs are short and their head is small in comparison to the rest of the body. On the other hand, their bones are a lot thicker and heavier. The eyes on the sides of the head give them a broad visual field allowing them to flee from predators, and their moveable ears are very expressive.

Behaviour

They live in harems formed by a male and a group of females with their foals. In captivity, they are docile and intelligent creatures that establish strong bonds with their riders or carers. They are very curious and try to take anything that draws their attention with their mouths, as they have long hairs in their lips that serve as touch organs.

Interesting facts

They were first domesticated in England with the purpose of transporting merchandise, and due to their peculiar beauty. They are currently kept for sports activities or as pets. There are pony populations out in the wild in England that do not need humans to survive.
