Food :

Description

Goats are midsize mammals, covered with a more or less short coat of different colours depending on the species. In Fuerteventura, the autochthonous goat is the Majorera goat, which is normally brown, black and white, with large ears. Both males and females have horns, but the male’s ones are larger. The females have a pair of mammary glands that are developed during the nursing period.

Behaviour

They are gregarious animals that follow a leader within the herd which is generally a male. The males give off a potent smell that helps them to attract females. They are very agile and they will climb cliffs and high walls to find food. By doing this, they do not compete with other species for food in the wild.

Interesting facts

In Fuerteventura, as in the whole of the Canary Islands, the Majorera Goat is very common, both in the wild and in captivity, where it may be bred for the production of milk and other dairy products, such as the Majorero cheese. Currently, goat’s milk is used to produce numerous types of products, such as yoghurts, soaps, liqueurs and even cosmetic products, all of very high quality.
