Patas monkey
Erythrocebus patas

Description
Patas monkeys are midsize primates with white, grey and reddish coloured coats. The males have white moustaches with curved ends, and darker, thick hair around the head. They walk on all fours and hardly use their tails for movement. They have large fangs that they use to defend themselves.
Ethology
Like all other primates, they are sociable and they live in groups of 5-15 individuals led by a dominant male, who is normally the eldest in the group. Only females are permanent members of the group, as the males leave as the hierarchy changes. They are diurnal and only climb trees to sleep. After a gestation period of 170 days, they have one infant, who is looked after by the females in the group.
Interesting facts
They are the fastest primates able to reach 55 km/h running on the ground. Their populations are dropping due to hunting for meat consumption, for illegal trafficking of exotic species or for their use in experiments. As they often attack crops, they are also often hunted or poisoned by farmers.
