Marabou
Leptoptilos crumeniferus

Description
The marabou stork has a slouching appearance, with the head and neck with hardly any feathers at all and its long solid beak with a wedge-like shape, which can reach a length of 30 cm. Another remarkable trait is its gular sac, which is reddish in colour, large and stretchable. The plumage on the rest of the body is grey, black and white.
Ethology
They breed in colonies, which can contain dozens, hundreds or even thousands of mating pairs. They build their nests in high trees. The clutch usually consists of 2-3 eggs, but there may be 1-5. Incubation lasts 29-31 days and is performed by both parents.
Interesting facts
Although it belongs to the heron family, it seems more like a vulture due to its scavenging habits. It flies high to find food and uses its large beak to tear at the decomposing meat of corpses. Like the vulture, it has hardly any feathers on its head and neck, which is an interesting adaptation that helps it to avoid getting dirty with blood whilst it is eating.
