Recovery Project Cuvier's Gazelle

IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION

Cuvier's gazelle is native to North Africa where it is endangered mainly due to being hunted for  their fur, meat and for trophy hunting.  Another case to consider is the destruction of their habitat.

RECOVERY PROJECT Cuvier's gazelle

Since 2005 Oasis Park Fuerteventura has been involved with the Higher Centre for Scientific Research (CSIC) in the recovery program of the gazelle Cuvier, who was rescued from extinction in the early 60's by the Experimental Station of Arid Zones (EEZA) and by the Spanish army in its retreat of the Sahara.

ACHIEVEMENTS

In 2005 arrived a group of Cuvier's gazelles at Oasis Park  composed of 5 females and 2 males.  Thanks to the similar climate conditions with their natural environment and good management, the reproduction of this species has been a success, increasing in number every year. The future of the Cuvier's gazelles born in

Oasis Park is the reintroduction into their natural habitat that meets the conditions to preserve the species.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

On October 21st 2016 the first reintroduction of a group of Cuvier's gazelle born in Oasis Park Fuerteventura  took place in Boukornine National Park in Tunisia, thus fulfilling the  objective of the  program.
