Jest to największy z dzioborogów. Jego upierzenie jest czarne z białymi piórami pierwotnymi, które widoczne są tylko podczas lotu. Plus grand que la femelle, le mâle a une tache rouge sur la tête et la gorge alors que la tache de la femelle est bleue. Son bec est long, fort et recourbé. Les pattes sont robustes et noires.

Las patas son robustas y de color negro.
