Description
They have a robust cylindrical body and long tail, Their colour varies from brownish to reddish tones. There is notable sexual dimorphism, with males much larger than femlaes. They have forked tongues, like snakes, as they are varanoidea lizards (the only lizards with forked tongues).

Behaviour
Their habitats are in chaco forest and bush forests, savannah grasslands and forest cleraings. They are diurnal and spend most of their time locating prey, with the help of their forked tongues. They have a varied diet, including vertebrates and arthropods, and parts of plantas. Sexual maturity is reached in the third year of life, when they are 30 cm long from snout to anus. Their clutch has an average of 21 eggs.

Interesting facts
When they feel threatened, they stay still until the atmosphere is calm, usually opening their mouth and letting out a hiss to try to intimidate the aggressor.
